5 Ways to Prepare for the Holidays With Epilepsy
The holiday season is one that I enjoy very much – filled with joy, celebration, and time with loved ones. But as someone with epilepsy, it also comes with certain challenges.
I’ve learned that preparation is key to enjoying the festivities while prioritizing my health.
Below, I’m sharing my top tips for preparing for the holidays with epilepsy, based on my own experiences and lessons I’ve picked up along the way.
Plan Around Triggers
Take note of potential triggers like flashing lights, stress, or disrupted sleep. Choose non-blinking decorations and schedule downtime to stay well-rested.
Communicate With Loved Ones
Let family and friends know how they can support you. Share your seizure first aid plan and any accommodations you might need during gatherings.
Pack a Holiday Survival Kit
Carry essential items like medication, water, and snacks. Include seizure-specific supplies (such as a medical ID or rescue medication) if needed.
Set Realistic Limits
Don’t overcommit to events. Choose activities that align with your energy levels and prioritize your well-being over holiday expectations.
Create a Safety Plan for Travel
Whether you’re traveling by car or plane, make sure that you have your medication, a list of emergency contacts, and a plan for managing seizures away from home.
With a little preparation and planning, you can enjoy the season while keeping your epilepsy in check.
